Bike repair shop set on fire in Ghaziabad’s Sihani Gate, says owner

Updated: 2023-03-26

GHAZIABAD: A 35-year-old woman alleged that miscreants stole tools and set fire to her bike repair shop in Sihani Gate on Wednesday. She reported tools worth Rs 20,000 and other valuables missing.
The complainant, Poonam Devi, is well known as the first woman bike mechanic in Ghaziabad. A resident of Patel Nagar, Poonam started the bike repair shop in December 2020 after her husband’s arms were paralysed.

Devi said at 8 am on Wednesday, she asked a customer, who had called about repairs, to visit her shop. Upon reaching her shop at 9 am, the man called to tell her that her shop was on fire. “I went to the shop and saw that it was on fire. Immediately, we called the fire department and cops. I had started to douse the flame with a bucket of water before a fire extinguisher reached the spot and controlled the situation,” she said.
“A police team also reached and I have made a written complaint with them,” Poonam said, explaining that she had started her shop from a wooden cart to support her family when they had no other means of income. She said her family lost all their savings in the lockdown and for paying for her husband’s treatment. “This shop had fulfilled all my daily family needs but now, someone has deliberately set it on fire and stolen my tools as well. Police should investigate the matter and arrest the culprits behind this incident,” she said.
Alok Dubey, additional DCP, Sihani Gate, said cops received a complaint in the matter and a team was formed to investigate the incident. “We will check the CCTV footage from nearby areas to investigate the matter,” Dubey said.
An officer said a transformer stands adjacent to the shop and sparks from it may have triggered the fire.
