Updated: 2023-04-01

KANPUR: Police recovered the body of paan kiosk owner- Gyan Chandra Sahu (40), who was missing since Friday’s fire in a commercial complex in Anwarganj Bansmandi area in Kanpur.
This was the first incident of loss of life in the fire accident.

A pall of gloom descended on Sahu’s house following the news of recovery of his body.
Gyan Chandra Sahu, a resident of Khadesar Bhartipur village, in Shambua area of Bidhnu, used to run a paan shop outside the complex in Bansmandi.
He is survived by his wife Deepa and two children.
During the search operation, fire department personnel found Sahu’s badly burnt body lying on the third floor of the complex.
“The body has been shifted for post-mortem, besides his family members have been informed,” commissioner of police BP Jogdand said.
About 12 to 14 persons, who were inside the four complexes at the time of the incident, were rescued.
Efforts on to douse blaze
The efforts to douse the massive fire that destroyed more than 800 shops located in five different shopping complexes including Arjan complex, AR Tower, Masood Complex, Hamraj Complex and Nafees Complex are still under way. The fire couldn’t be controlled even 24 hours after the incident.
“Despite our massive efforts, the blaze is still on in different parts of the market, particularly the rear side of the commercial complexes. A hydraulic fire machine has been pressed into service to extinguish the fire. Teams of SDRF (State Disaster Response Force) and NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) have also arrived, besides fire tenders of the adjoining districts and Kanpur (City) are toiling hard to douse the fire. We expect the fire to be completely extinguished in one to two hours,” the police commissioner said.
