KOZHIKODE: A major fire broke out at a prominent textile shop at Kallayi road in Kozhikode early on Saturday morning.
According to the fire and rescue services department, the blaze started off at Jayalakshmi Silks at around 6am in the morning.
As many as 15 fire tenders from various fire stations in Kozhikode and also from Malappuram district battled the fire for over two and a half hours and brought it under control at around 9am.
Two cars which were parked in the side of the building were gutted after a portion of the burning facade of the building fell on top of the vehicles.
There were no casualties in the mishap but a huge stock of textiles was gutted in the fire.
It was passersby who first spotted the blaze and smoke billowing out of the building and soon informed the fire and rescue personnel. The fire soon engulfed the top floor of the multi-storey building but fire and rescue personnel managed to contain the fire from spreading to the lower floors of the building.
