Updated: 2023-03-29
INDORE: Over 35 guests had a narrow escape after a massive fire broke out at a multi-storey Papaya Tree Hotel at Rau circle in Indore on Wednesday morning.
In an early morning operation, fire officials rescued all the guests trapped in their rooms through the balconies using cranes and ladders before dousing the flames.
“Three fire tenders were rushed to the spot as soon as the fire broke out at Papaya tree hotel and were engaged in bringing the flames under control. More than 30 water tankers were used to control the fire which had spread to two floors in the five storey building,” said fire SP RS Nigwal.
Nigwal said that the fire had first started in the ceiling of the ground floor in the restaurant area.
“Due to sudden disconnection of the electricity, the alarm was not sounded and the fire hydrants system stopped working. The guests staying in the hotel room were not aware of the fire. It was after acrid smoke started rising up, they came to know and came out in the balconies for help,” he said.
The guests were asked to tie knots of the bedsheets inside their bedrooms and hung through it to reach the ladders which had been installed to rescue them.
Nigwal said that no casualties were reported but some people were rushed to the hospital with injuries and smoke inhalation.
Senior police officials and a force from Mhow, Rau, Kishanganj, Rajendra Nagar and Tejaji Nagar police stations had reached the spot to manage the situation.
