Fire engulfs mattress manufacturing unit

COIMBATORE: A major fire broke out at a mattress and sofa manufacturing unit at Arivozhi Nagar near Kovaipudur on Tuesday morning. Fire and rescue services personnel put out the fire after more than three hours of struggle.
The unit was managed by Mohammed Sheik Kasal, 45, of Al-Ameen Colony near South Ukkadam, in a rental space. “On Monday evening, a fresh stock of foam was stored in the unit. Around 7am on Tuesday morning, locals noticed fire in the unit and alerted the Kovaipudur fire service station,” said a police officer.
Initially, a mini water mist vehicle with 350-litre capacity reached the spot, followed by a fire tender from Coimbatore south fire service station. “The fire was put out around 10.45am. Three water tankers were used . The unit was completely damaged. The damaged items were cleared with the help of two earthmovers,” the officer said.
The Madukkarai police inspected the spot. Police said the unit was not insured. The unit owner had not lodged any complaint till Tuesday night.
