Dehradun: After 4 kids die in fire, Tiuni naib tehsildar, local fire unit suspended

DEHRADUN: A day after four children were killed in a massive fire that gutted a four-storeyed house in Tiuni area of Dehradun district, district magistrate Sonika (who goes by her first name) suspended the local naib tehsildar and the entire Tiuni fire service unit, including in-charge and three staffers, for negligence on Friday.
The action came amid allegations by local residents that two of the fire tenders from Tiuni fire station that reached the spot on Thursday evening ran out of water after a few minutes of firefighting.
Angry residents said that the firemen went back 6km to refill water, and that by the time they returned, the house was completely engulfed in fire, “leaving little scope for the rescue of the four children trapped inside”.
Sonika, who was at the spot to monitor the rescue operation the entire night, said, “After the initial inquiry, along with the naib tehsildar, the entire fire service unit of Tiuni has been suspended. A magisterial probe has also been ordered into the incident. The fire itself seems to have happened due to a gas leak from an LPG cylinder kept inside.”
The four children who lost their lives in the incident have been identified as sisters Saijal (2) and Adhira (5), and Samriddhi (9) and Sonam (9). Thre others, Swati Singh, Kusum and Aarif Malik, are undergoing treatment at a hospital.
Sonika said that bodies of two children have been recovered. “Search is on to recover the remaining two bodies. State director general of police (DGP) Ashok Kumar also ordered a high-level inquiry into the incident. “The investigation will be carried out on priority by the DIG of fire services, Nivedita Kukreti, who shall submit the report to me within three days. We will take strict action if negligence is proved on part of the fire services personnel,” said Kumar.
