7 people die in Taytay fire incident that burned 40 houses on Easter Eve
Updated: 2023-04-09
Seven relatives died in a fire that hit their house in Taytay, Rizal on Saturday night, Super Radyo dzBB’s Luisito Santos reported Sunday.
The fatalities were reportedly trapped inside their house in Barangay San Juan when the fire broke out on Easter Eve.
Among the victims was a 2-year-old toddler, the youngest of the victims, and the oldest was 60 years old.
Taytay Fire Marshall Inspector Raymond Cantillon said the bodies were found in the kitchen, and in the restroom.
Based on the initial investigation of Taytay Fire Station, the victims tried to get out of their burning house, but failed to do so as it was located at the end of the street.
The fire started at 9:43 p.m. on Saturday and reached the third alarm. Fire out was declared at 11:05 p.m.
“Eskinita kasi ‘yun — one way in, one way out. Nagsimula ang sunog sa bungad na bahay at malaki na siya at hindi nakalabas ang mga biktima natin,” Cantillon said in a dzBB interview.
(The fire started at a front house along a “one way in, one way out” street, and it spread quickly, that’s why the victims weren’t able to get out.)
“Wala nang matakbuhan at karamihan ng harap na bahay ay made of light materials kaya mabilis kumalat ang apoy,” he added.
(There was nowhere to run and most of the houses at the front was made of light materials so the fire spread quickly.)
Around 40 houses were burned down, leaving 60 families homeless. Affected individuals are currently staying at the San Juan Gym, according to Cantillon.
Authorities are still investigating the incident to determine the cause of the fire. —LBG/KG, GMA Integrated News
