Two dead, five injured as gas cylinder explosion triggers fire near BRS party event in Telangana

HYDERABAD: At least two people died while five others suffered severe injuries when a gas cylinder exploded in a hut due to an accident involving firecrackers near a Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) party public event organised in Khammam district of Telangana on Wednesday.
The deceased were identified as Ramesh and Mangu.
Five other men suffered injuries and according to police four of them have to undergo surgeries due to severe injuries.
“We have shifted the injured to government hospital in Khammam and all of them are out of danger,” Khammam police commissioner Vishnu Warrier said.
The mishap occurred at Cheemalapadu village in Karepally mandal of Khammam district at around 11.45 am.
BRS party organised an ‘Athmeeya Sammelan’ event with party workers and supporters in Cheemalapadu village which falls under Wyra assembly constituency.
BRS party leaders Khammam MP Nama Nageshwara Rao and Wyra MLA Ramulu Naik were present at the event and firecrackers were also burst at a distance, reportedly by the supporters.
A hut which is about 250 metres away from the event caught fire while the crackers were being burnt and a gas cylinder exploded in the fire.
Seven persons who were standing near the hut suffered severe injuries as the sharpenel from the exploded cylinder severed their limbs, police said.
Two of the victims died and five others are undergoing treatment.
“We are yet to ascertain the exact reason for the fire,” the commissioner said.
