Firefighters have brought under control a fire at a warehouse on Nawabpur Road in Old Dhaka nearly two hours after it broke out.
The Fire Service and Civil Defence sent 14 units to the scene, around a kilometre from the burnt-down Bangabazar market, after the incident was reported at 10:08pm on Thursday, said Shahjahan Shikder, a deputy assistant director of the fire service.
The first fire engine reached the site at 10:30pm, he said.
The fire was brought under control around midnight, the fire service said.
Nawabpur Road houses wholesale markets of mechanical and electronic equipment.
Tajul Islam, a director of the fire service, said the warehouse with around 20 units was destroyed by the fire.
There were no immediate reports of casualties and the authorities were yet to assess the extent of the damage caused by the fire.
The workers of the warehouse lived in a unit from where the fire started, believes the fire service, which found gas lines and cylinders there.
Tajul said they would launch an investigation to confirm the cause of the fire.
He thinks the authorities should also investigate why fire incidents are occurring quite often.
Manik, a local who gave a single name, said the firefighters struggled to reach the warehouse as it was situated on a narrow lane next to Suritola Primary School. Curious onlookers also hampered the fire service’s work, he said.
The premises where the fire broke out is known as Ayub Bhaban, according to him.
On Apr 4, a devastating blaze destroyed nearly 4,000 shops made of wood and tin sheets at Bangabazar, the largest clothing marketplace of the country.
The warehouse where the fire erupted at Nawabpur is tin-roofed, Shahjahan said.
