Plumes of smoke billowed into the sky as a fire consumed a retail annexe at the lobby of East Village Hotel in Marine Parade. Fifty people had to be evacuated, of which nine were casualties. Two firefighters were also injured while fighting the fire.
Four children and five adults were injured. All of them were taken to the Singapore General Hospital. Two SCDF firefighters were also taken to SGH for minor injuries and heat exhaustion.
Far East Organization hospitality business group chief operating officer Raphael Saw said all guests and staff were accounted for and safely evacuated. ‘Our immediate focus is on the well-being of our guests and staff. The few guests and workers who were affected by smoke inhalation are receiving medical attention. We are arranging for alternative accommodation for guests at Changi Village Hotel and helping them to facilitate their ongoing travel arrangements,’ he said.
SCDF were informed of the fire at 9.06am and arrived at the scene in eight minutes. The fire involved construction materials.
