Fire breaks out at commercial complex in Chennai; no casualties

CHENNAI: A fire broke out on the terrace of a commercial complex, damaging a generator and a portion of the lift, in Chennai’s Royapettah on Sunday afternoon.
No injuries or casualties were reported in the incident, according to officials.
Security guard of the Real Tower building alerted the fire control room after spotting the blaze at around 2.30pm.
After getting the information, fire brigade personnel rushed to the spot and launched an operation to put out the blaze.
As there was thick smoke emanating from the terrace, many motorists stopped on Royapettah flyover connecting Royapettah and Mylapore. Traffic police personnel blocked vehicular movement on the flyover for about an hour.
Traffic was resumed on the flyover from around 4pm. Meanwhile, around 30 fire personnel from Egmore and Korukkupet apart from Teynampet arrived at the spot and they used a skylift vehicle to douse the blaze on the terrace.
On the fourth floor of the building, there was a satellite channel Mathimugam is functioning and the staff were immediately evacuated while other offices remained closed as it was Sunday. However, no one was injured, police said.
Divisional fire officer (DFO) Robin and others supervised the whole operation. The fire was completely extinguished around 3.30pm. Further investigations are on.
