Fire at 4-storey building in Chennai’s Royapettah
Updated: 2023-05-01
CHENNAI: A fire broke out on the terrace of a commercial complex off RK Salai in Royapettah on Sunday afternoon, gutting a generator and a portion of a lift. No one was injured in the accident at the four-storey Real Tower, which is located near the more famous Yellow Pages building.
While the exact cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, preliminary inquiries revealed that it may have been triggered by an electrical short circuit.
The blaze was first spotted around 2.30 pm by a security guard at the complex who alerted the fire control room. Soon, personnel attached to the Teynampet station led by leading fireman Pratap rushed to the spot and began a battle to douse the flames.
As thick smoke emanated from the terrace and many motorists stopped abruptly on the top of the flyover connecting Royapettah and Mylapore, traffic police blocked vehicular movement on the flyover temporarily.
Around 30 fire personnel from Egmore and Korukkupet joined the team from Teynampet and used a skylift to reach the terrace. As the building is located bang next to the flyover, the fire and rescue services personnel found it difficult to reach the spot along a narrow road.
While staff of a majority of the offices in the complex were absent as it was a holiday, employees of a satellite TV channel located on the fourth floor were functioning and were immediately evacuated, police said.
Divisional fire officer Robin and senior officers others supervised the operation that succeeded in putting out the fire completely by 3.30pm. Traffic was resumed on the flyover by around 4 pm. Further investigations are on, police said.
