THANE: A woman, aged around 50, was charred to death when the autorickshaw she was travelling in caught fire after meeting with an accident at Gaimukh on Thane’s Ghodbunder Road early on Wednesday.
Thane police have booked the auto driver, Rajesh Yadav (45), who is undergoing treatment for burn injuries, under the IPC and Motor Vehicles Act. Police are trying to identify the woman who had arrived from Mangaluru at Thane station and hired Yadav’s auto for Borivli around 5.15am.
“Yadav rode into the opposite lane on the busy highway and collided with an oncoming truck. The auto toppled, crashed into the divider and went up in flames,” said senior inspector Rajesh Babshetti of Kasarwadavli police station. Passersby pulled Yadav out to safety.
“The woman, who was carrying luggage, got trapped inside the vehicle. She was pulled out only after the blaze was controlled and rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors declared her dead,” said Avinash Sawant, chief, Thane regional disaster management cell.
