Fire breaks out in Gzb bldg basement, 16 vehicles gutted

Updated: 2023-05-16

GHAZIABAD: Residents of a four-storey building in Indraprastha colony in Tila More had a narrow escape early on Monday when a fire broke out in the basement of the building. While a four-wheeler and 15 bikes were gutted, no one was injured. Fire officers said a short-circuit in the electricity board started the fire around 2.30am. The flames soon spread throughout the basement, where residents had parked their vehicles.  “We received information about the incident around 2.40am and immediately three fire tenders were rushed to the spot. Initial investigation revealed that the electricity metres were installed in the parking area near the stairs and a short circuit took place due to which a fire broke out,” said chief fire officer Rahul Pal.
Bali Sidhu, who lives in the society, told TOI that there are a total of 16 flats in this building.
“There is a basement just below the apartment, where residents park their vehicles. The electricity boards are installed in the basement near the stairs leading to the flats. Since all these boards were fixed to a wooden board, the fire spread quickly,” he said.
Initially, a resident on the first floor learned about the fire when he smelled something burning.
“Immediately, he alerted the other families and rushed to the terrace. One of the residents then informed the police and the fire department about the incident. But before any help could reach them, all the residents reached the terrace, as they were not able to get down due to the fire. From the terrace, they jumped into the adjacent building to save themselves. No one received any injuries,” added Sidhu.
Residents claimed the fire tenders arrived after around 20 minutes.
“I woke up when I heard a loud blast that occurred when the petrol tank of a bike burst. A resident alerted us and others about the fire. We reached the terrace and using the adjacent building, we came down. All the vehicles were gutted,” said another resident, Rajendra Kumar.
