Massive fire at Ludhiana garbage dump, no casualties
Updated: 2023-05-16
LUDHIANA: The main garbage dump at Tajpur Road in Ludhiana caught fire on Tuesday night. The flames were visible to the residents at Chandigarh Road in the city.
The smoke covered the sky in the area and residents from the nearby areas complained about difficulty in breathing. The firemen reached the spot to control blaze. As per the directions of National Green Tribunal, one fire tender remains stationed at the dump but as fire spread to large area, more fire tenders were pressed into service.
Notably, the garbage from entire city is being collected at the Tajpur dump by the municipal corporation for almost four decades. Now big mountains of garbage have been formed here. Gases have now formed in the garbage lying there for a long time, due to which the fire is continuously burning inside the garbage.
Accusing the municipal administration of being negligent, engineer Kapil Arora claimed that he will complain about the incident to the NGT.
Last year also, a major accident broke out near the dump site. The corporation administration has handed over the work to a private company to dispose off the garbage lying here. But the situation is still not normal.
