CHIANG MAI: A fire that destroyed a building housing more than 150 golf carts near the residences of the Shinawatra clan early yesterday was unlikely to be politically motivated, police said.
Police said security at the housing project was tight, with security guards and police officers on duty and constant CCTV surveillance. No deaths or injuries were reported, but damage was estimated at 30 million baht.
The fire broke out about 2am at the Green Valley housing project in Chiang Mai’s Mae Rim district, just 200m from the home of former prime minister Somchai Wongsawat and his wife Yaowapa. Mr Somchai’s brother-in-law, Thaksin Shinawatra, and other members of their families have properties in the same project.
It took more than an hour to extinguish the fire. Investigators said the carts were left in the garage to be charged up, adding that the fire could have been the result of a short circuit. Investigations into the cause of the fire continue.
