Fire breaks out at godown in Kerala’s Thumba, 1 fireman dead

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A firefighter died while dousing fire that broke out at the godown of Kerala Medical Services Corporation Limited at KINFRA in Thumba in the wee hours of Tuesday.
According to residents, an explosion was heard at around 2am. The building was completely gutted in the fire.
Renjith, a resident of Attingal and part of the fire and rescue team with Chackai fire unit, reached the spot with the team soon after the alert was received.
While the team tried to break open the door of the godown, the wall made of hollow bricks fell over the fire service personnel. A brick fell over the chest of Renjith and he lost his balance.
The team members rescued him and took him to a private hospital where he died in the morning.
Minister V Sivankutty said that a probe will be conducted into the fire outbreak in Thumba. “The incident was really unfortunate,” he said condoling the death of fireman Renjith.
Later, all the fire units in Thiruvananthapuram were pressed into action in Thumba. The fire was doused completely after five-hour operation. Fire force personnnel are still deployed at the site to avert any further outbreak of fire.
Last week, a massive fire was reported at Kollam drug warehouse and the health department had estimated loss of Rs 8 crore.
