PUNE: About 10 big godowns of plywood, wood, and laminates located in the Timber Market area, off Nehru Road in Pune’s Bhawani Peth, were gutted in the fire that broke out around 4.15am on Thursday. No person was injured in the incident.
The fire firefighters managed to control the fire around 9am.
“We received the emergency call at 4.30am. The fire broke out in one of the godowns which are made up of tin sheets and iron bars and some even have concrete walls,” city fire brigade chief Devendra Potphode told TOI.
“So far, 10 godowns have been gutted in the incident. The wood, plywood, laminates and other material stored in these godowns provided fuel to the fire.”
“The cause of the fire is not known and as of now, it is not known from which godown the fire broke out,” he said.
“A vasti is located nearby, and we moved over 10 LPG cylinders from the hutments of the vasti to a safe place to avert further spread of the fire,” Potphode said.
“Also, a Pune municipal corporation’s school is located nearby. The flames were high and the wooden benches of some of the classrooms were also damaged in the incident,” he said.
“About 30 water fire tenders and some water tankers are in action to extinguish the fire,” he said.
“It was a brigade call and all the fire tenders rushed to the spot. We successfully controlled the spread of the fire and prevented it from spread in the vasti and other areas,” he said.
