Woman, 80, dies as hut catches fir

CHENNAI: An 80-year-old woman burned to death on Thursday morning after her hut caught fire in Gummidipoondi, about 50 km from here.
Police identified the deceased as G Rajammal, of Sunnambukulam. Police said Rajammal and her husband Govindaraj lived alone in a thatched roof hut.
On Thursday about 4am, when smoke emerged from the hut, neighbours rushed to help. They managed to rescue Govindaraj who sustained injuries. A family of four living next to the elderly couple, including two school girls, were also rushed out of the house. They suffered minor burns, said police. Firemen put out the blaze and removed the charred body of Rajammal from the house.
The Arambakkam police registered a case and are investigating.
