Fire at building in Dum Dum’s Shyamnagar, residents evacuated

KOLKATA: A fire broke out at a third-floor flat of a six-storey apartment in Dum Dum’s Shyamnagar on Friday afternoon, triggering panic among residents. Three fire engines were pressed into service to douse the flames.
According to local sources, the fire started due to an electrical short-circuit in the flat around 4.30pm. Locals raised an alarm after they saw a column of thick smoke billowing from the building. “All residents were immediately evacuated and the electric supply to the building was disconnected,” said Tamal Chakraborty, a resident of the building.
A team from Dum Dum police station cordoned off the area as firefighters began work. Cops suspect an electrical short-circuit from a set-top box might have sparked the fire. Fre brigade officers managed to bring the blaze under control within an hour.
“Thick smoke enveloped the room of the flat where the fire broke out and it initially made it difficult for firefighters to enter the flat. The fire brigade officers, however, eventually managed to enter and bring the blaze under control,” said a senior police officer of the Barrackpore Commissionerate.
Fire department officials said all residents had been rescued unhurt. Among those were several elderly persons and at least one child. At least five persons had climbed to the roof to escape the smoke and fire department officials brought them down after the building cooled down a little. The building’s water hydrant worked and that helped contain the fire, a fire department official said.
“Dense smoke slowed down our initial efforts to contain the fire,” said a security guard of the apartment.
