Saudi fire kills 9 Bangladeshis
Updated: 2014-05-13-10:07

At least nine Bangladeshis have been killed in a furniture shop fire in Riyadh on Monday night, the foreign ministry has confirmed.

Seven of them – Md Jalal, Abdul Gaffar, Bahauddin, Shah Alam, Nazir Hossain, Matiur Rahman, and ‘Selim’ – were from Comilla .

One Md Akkas was from Madaripur, while another man, Zakir Hossain, hailed from Feni district, the ministry’s Director of External Publicity wing Nripendra Chandra Debnath said.

He said they used to work in a Bangladesh-owned furniture shop, ‘Titas Furniture’, near Riyadh.

Of the 15 workers, 13 were Bangladeshis, he said.

The fire broke out at about 10.30pm (Saudi time), killing 11 of them on the spot.

The foreign ministry said the Bangladeshis were burnt beyond recognition.

The Bangladesh mission in Riyadh confirmed the names with the help of another Bangladeshi, Abdul Hannan, who knew those who worked in the shop.

Two brothers, Raju and Mainul, were running the shop with a Saudi owner.

The foreign ministry in a media release said Raju was absconding after the incident while Mainul is in Bangladesh now.

All bodies have been kept at the Somochi Hospital mortuary in Riyadh.

The foreign ministry said they would be brought back once identified and compensations were realized.

Bangladesh ambassador in Riyadh Md Shahidul Islam was overseeing the modalities, it said.
