GHAZIABAD: A fire broke out at two fast-food shops on the ground floor hall of Vaishali metro station in the early hours of Thursday. Metro operations were not on at that hour and the station compound was empty.
Four fire engines took nearly an hour to douse the flames but the appliances and furniture in the two shops were gutted, chief fire officer Rahul Pal.
There are four shops on the ground floor hall and only one was open at that hour, the CFO said. “Around 12.30am, the staff of the shop noticed smoke coming out from one of the food outlets adjacent to it and informed the police,” he said.
Four fire engines were sent to the spot. “As firemen cut the shop’s shutter, the flames reached an adjacent shop. The fire was doused before it could spread further,” the CFO said on Thursday. A short circuit is suspected to have sparked the fire.
The shop, owned by Monty and Ribal Singh, where the fire first broke out, was gutted, however, the losses are yet to be estimated. The brothers said they were running the eatery for the last two years at the metro station. The second shop is owned by Irfaan.
Nearly 360 fire incidents have been reported across the district in the first quarter of the year and 70 people were rescued by the department. Fire officials said on Thursday that over 30% of these incidents were reported from illegal factories while 20% were from hotels and restaurants and 25% in high-rise societies.
Around 50% of the fires were caused due to short circuits, while 25% were attributed to garbage burning.
