Third fire at Phraeksa extinguished
Updated: 2014-05-13-06:04

The third fire to have engulfed parts of Phraeksa landfill in Samut Prakan was believed to have been started by scrap scavengers throwing away cigarette butts that were still smouldering. Surapol Promsaka Na Sakolnakorn

Firefighters yesterday afternoon managed to extinguish the third fire to hit Phraeksa dump site in two months. The fire began about 11.30am and black smoke started to billow. The fire started along the southern border of the 70-rai site near Soi Wittayu Kanbin in Muang district of Samut Prakan. Phraeksa Tambon Administration Organisation’s chief administrator Prapat Chobsorn said he believed the fire was started by scrap scavengers failing to extinguish cigarettes properly. About 90 families living around the landfill were told of the fire and asked to evacuate. Most of the houses were empty when the fire started. Only 11 people from six families left their houses and stayed at the TAO office. Some other 20 families refused to move. Everyone in the area was given face masks for protection. Mr Prapat said 10 fire trucks were deployed to control the flames. The fire was put out about 4pm. The dump site first caught on fire on March 16 and again on April 8. It took over a week to get the first blaze under control, which caused respiratory problems to residents in the area. Smoke from the fire affected several neighbouring areas, including the capital’s Bang Na district
