3 dead in explosion at firecracker godown in Andhra Pradesh’s Tirupati district

TIRUPATI: Three persons were killed and two others sustained severe burns in an explosion reported at a firecracker godown near Kuvvakolli village in Varadaiahpalem mandal of Tirupati district on Wednesday.
The deceased were identified as Sankaraiah (32) and Nagendra (25), natives of Kuvvakolli and Edukondalu (40) of Gudur.
A police officer told reporters that there were five workers when the godown suddenly caught fire in the afternoon.
While three of the workers died on the spot, two others – Veera Raghavulu (worker) and Kalyan (village volunteer) were shifted to a hospital in Srikalahasti and then to SVR Ruia government general hospital in Tirupati for better treatment.
The impact was so huge that bodies of the three workers were blown into pieces.
Fire tenders brought the fire under control after struggling for nearly three hours.
Though officials could not immediately say the exact reason behind the mishap, it is suspected that the explosion was first occurred outside the godown, and the fire then engulfed the entire godown.
