Blaze at 9-storey Dwarka building kills 85-yr-old man

Updated: 2023-06-11

NEW DELHI: An 85-year-old man was killed after a fire broke out at a nine-storey building in Dwarka on Friday. The deceased was identified as Sadhan Chander, who lived with his son-in-law and daughter on the seventh floor. He retired from Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), police said.

According to the fire department, at 8.26pm on Friday, they received a call about a fire at Mass Apartment in Dwarka Sector-10. Atul Garg, director of DFS, said nine fire tenders were sent to the spot. It was found that the fire was in two flats on the seventh and eighth floors of the building.
Another officer said, “Domestic articles on the seventh floor had caught fire. Within minutes, the fire spread to a flat on the eighth floor. The AC and curtains of the flat were engulfed in flames.” The blaze was controlled after one hour.
DCP (Dwarka) M Harshavardhan said they were alerted by the residents about the fire. “After the fire was doused, firefighters and police personnel found Chander in one of the flats. He was taken to a nearby hospital by the cops, but he could not survive.”
Another police officer said, ” Chander was found in the kitchen. The room was filled with smoke and he might have inhaled toxic gases. However, we will wait for the postmortem report to ascertain the cause of death.”
The man was alone at the time of the incident. His son-in-law and daughter had gone to the local market.
Cops suspect a short circuit in one of the electrical appliances to be the reason behind the fire. “The report from the fire department will ascertain the cause,” the officer said.
“The building had fire safety arrangements in place, but haphazard parking of vehicles in the area was a hindrance. We struggled to turn or park our fire tenders,” said station officer Mukul Bharadwaj.
