GHAZIABAD: Two women died whereas eight others were rescued after a massive fire broke out in a four-storey building (G+3) in Loni Border in Ghaziabad on Monday morning.
According to police, the deceased were identified as Mamta (40) and Bharti Devi (74).
Rahul Pal, chief fire officer (CFO) said that at around 6.52am today, we got the information from a neighbour that a fire broke out in a building. Immediately, two fire tenders were sent from Tronica City, Vaishali and Kotwali to control the situation.
“As we reached, the fire had spread inside the house and it was very difficult to enter the premises through the main gate. One team of fire was trying to douse the flame at the main gate of the building while two other teams were formed to rescue the people. We saw some people on the terrace of the building and we used a ladder to save them,” he said.
“While we learnt that a few people were stuck on the second and third floor. We broke the wall on the second floor of the building by using the terrace of an adjacent house. We rescued two more people who were lying on the stairs. We found Mamta’s body in a room on the second floor while Bharti’s was found on the third floor. Immediately, we sent them to a nearby hospital for medical treatment but doctors declared both the women dead on arrival. They died due to suffocation,” he said.
“Initial investigation revealed that on the ground floor, a tent house office was built and related items were stored. While three families were living on the other three floors of the building. We are suspecting that a fire broke out after a short circuit at the ground floor. When the incident took place, the people were sleeping. The neighbours saw the fire and smoke after which they raised an alarm,” CFO said.
During the rescue operation, an officer of the fire department also got injured after a heavy door fell on him. The officer has been identified as Vinay Rathi (28), a fireman in the department. He is stable now but admitted to a nearby hospital.
