Fire at Siliguri water plant
Updated: 2023-06-15
SILIGURI: A fire broke out in the store room of a water treatment plant at Fulbari on Wednesday, leaving a security guard with 30% burns. He is currently undergoing treatment at a private health facility in Siliguri.
According to an SMC official, the fire broke out around 2am in the store room located outside the plant. A bike parked close by was burnt, along with two trees.
“Around 29 tonnes of calcium hypochlorite – used to disinfect water – was kept in the store room. But it is not flammable. According to preliminary investigation, we suspect a short circuit may have caused the fire,” said an SMC official.
SMC mayor Gautam Deb said, “The police are looking into the matter. If necessary, a forensic team will conduct an investigation. Necessary actions are being taken.”
In Siliguri, water is drawn from the Teesta-Mahananda canal and brought to the treatment plant for purification. Water flows from Fulbari to 16 overhead tanks and four underground reservoirs. – Roshan Gupta
