For 2nd time in 3 weeks, fire breaks out in south Mumbai building

MUMBAI: An 11th-floor flat of Breach Candy Apartments on Bhulabhai Desai Road in south Mumbai was gutted following a fire on Thursday evening. This is the second fire incident reported from the 15-storey tower in nearly three weeks.
Prima facie, Thursday’s incident was owing to a short-circuit in the AC unit in the bedroom, said sources. The owner of the affected flat, Suniel Bharwani, an investment banker, had moved to another place following the blaze that erupted on the 12th floor of the building on May 27. He returned to his 11th floor flat on Wednesday.
“The previous fire had impacted the wiring of the entire building. So, before I came back to my flat, I coordinated with the society and electrician to ensure it was now safe,” said Bharwani, who sustained minor burns on the right leg. “Around 6pm, I switched on the AC and saw sparks. I immediately switched it off, but till I could get my phone from the living room to call the electrician, the flames had already spread. I tried to open the extinguisher, but failed. By then, neighbours rushed in to rescue me and my househelp.”
Firemen rushed to the spot soon after. Around nine fire engines were engaged in the firefighting operation and the flames were doused easily, a fire officer said. The blaze was confined to the electric wiring and household articles. “The security alerted all residents and we evacuated the building,” said a resident.
In the May 27 blaze that had engulfed the 12th floor flat of Breach Candy Apartments two LPG cylinder explosions had escalated the situation. While two people were successfully rescued from the staircase, no one was injured in the incident.
