SINGAPORE – A 79-year-old man died in hospital after a fire in Bukit Batok on Wednesday.

The police and the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) were alerted to the incident at Block 307 Bukit Batok Street 31 at 6.46pm and 6.50pm respectively.

The fire, which involved a sofa in the living room of a 12th floor unit, was extinguished by the SCDF using a water jet.

The man was unconscious when taken to the Singapore General Hospital (SGH), where he subsequently died.

Dr Amy Khor, the MP for Hong Kah North, told The Straits Times that she and the grassroots team had visited the man’s family and an affected neighbour. “We are following up closely with them and will render help where needed,” said the Senior Minister of State for Sustainability and the Environment, and Transport.

In a separate incident also in Bukit Batok, three people were taken to SGH and about 70 residents were evacuated following a fire in a flat early on Friday morning.

Three fire engines, two ambulances and a police car were seen at the scene, in photographs published by Chinese-language newspaper Lianhe Zaobao.

The SCDF said it was alerted to a fire at Block 392 Bukit Batok West Avenue 5 around 3.45am on Friday. The blaze involved the contents of a living room, and the flames were put out with a water jet.

The cause of both fires are under investigation.
