Fire engulfs 50 baniyan shops in Tirupur city

TIRUPUR: As many as 50 shops were gutted in a massive fire that broke out at Khaderpet baniyan bazaar in Tirupur city on Friday night.
The owners of the shops had closed them around 8.30pm. Fire was first spotted in a shop around 9.25pm and it quickly spread to nearby shops.
Fire and rescue services personnel rushed to the spot in five fire tenders and were struggling to control the fire.
Clothes worth more than Rs 1 crore and five motorcycles were destroyed in the fire.
The fire started due to a short circuit, a fire and rescue officer said. “A major disaster was averted as the workers in the shops had left for homes,” he told TOI.
Tirupur south MLA Selvaraj inspected the spot.
