Updated: 2023-06-25

LUCKNOW: It was a narrow escape for about 24 students after a fire broke out in a three-storey building having a coaching institute, offices and shops located close to the Badshahnagar metro station in Mahanagar on Saturday.Police said that at around 11.40 am, the servants of a showroom of fancy lights owned by one Sanjay Agarwal spotted smoke emanating from the back portion and they informed the owner. Later, they cleared the items to see the place from where the smoke was emanating and the flow of smoke increased further and spread to other parts of the building, which housed a coaching centre and some offices.

The staff tried to douse the fire with the help of fire hydrants kept in the showroom and the nearby shopkeepers also reached with about 30 fire hydrants, but the fire could not be controlled. The employees dialled number 112 and the fire brigade along with policemen reached the scene at around 11.58 pm.
Assistant commissioner of police, Mahanagar, Neha Tripathi told TOI that around 24 students were rescued from the spot with the help of the police team first and then people from the offices.
“On the first, second and third floors of the building, there are offices of coaching institutes, insurance companies and other companies,” Tripathi said.
Chief fire officer, Lucknow, Mangesh Kumar and FSO Hazratganj Ram Kumar reached the spot with about seven fire tenders.
“The smoke was so thick that the firemen could not see the spot from where it was emanating from. After that, firemen Sanjay Kumar, Shiv Babu, Rohit Yadav, Ashish Pandey, Mohit Kumar and Rajneesh were sent to the showroom with breathing apparatus,” said CFO Kumar.
The CFO said that about 30 people were present in other offices, but no one knew about the fire. When the fire brigade arrived, the people present there were safely pulled out of the living room in the east. There have been no casualties.
An employee of the shop, Vikash Kumar said that the showroom had chandeliers and fancy lights worth several lakhs. “The goods were brought five days back from Transportnagar,”
