Fire engulfs waste processing unit
Updated: 2023-07-02
Coimbatore: A major fire broke out at a waste processing unit at Ondipudur in the early hours of Saturday. According to a corporation official, two of the three sheds at the unit, which were built at a cost of 69 lakh each, were destroyed in the incident.
While one of the destroyed sheds was used for storing segregated dry waste, the second one was meant for biogas production. “The sheds were completely damaged and they have to be built afresh now,” the official said. He said the fire was first spotted by the guest workers at the unit at 2am. “They were staying on its premises. When alerted, we reached the spot. Three fire tenders were pressed into service to contain the fire. We deployed 15 water trucks to supply water. Since both the sheds were up in flames, firefighters had to demolish the sidewalls to gain access to put out the fire.”
While the fire was brought under control by 8am, smoke continued to envelop the area, the official said. “By 10am, everything was brought under control.”
The fire didn’t affect the nearby sewage water treatment plant, dog shelter and the third shed, where biomass is made from wet waste.
The cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained. “We have lodged a complaint with the Singanallur police,” the official added. tnn
