MUMBAI: A 55-year-old man died after a fire broke out in his house in Mumbai’s Goregaon (West) on Monday morning.
The incident took place in Prem Nagar locality at 8.30am.
According to locals, the deceased, identified as Harish Chauhan, 56, lived on the first floor of a slum along with two others. In the morning around 7.50am, he went to the kitchen area of the house to switch on the gas when a sudden spark came out and engulfed him completely. Two others in the room rushed out and managed to escape unhurt.
Chauhan was sent to Hindu Hruday Samrat Balasaheb Thackeray Trauma Care Municipal Hospital in Jogeshwari where he was declared a brought dead.
Local BJP MLA Vidya Thakur who reached the incident site said that thankfully the gas cylinder did not get involved in the blaze or else the situation could have become worse.
“It is a very tragic incident but had the gas cylinder also got involved the disaster could have been much bigger. A local used his presence of mind and brought in a fire extinguisher from the nearby shop and hence the flames could be doused faster minimizing the damage,” she said.
Prem Nagar is a large slum area in Goregaon with close to 30,000 houses. A fire brigade officer said that before they could have reached the site, the flames were doused and that the blaze was confined to the gas stove.
Prima facie the cause of the blaze is likely to be gas leakage which the victim did not suspect while switching it on.
