RAJAHMUNDRY: A fire erupted from a borewell situated in an aqua pond near Sivakodu village in Razole mandal in Andhra Pradesh’s Konaseema district, on Saturday.
The fire department and the ONGC personnel rushed to the spot to douse the fire. The fire which is streaming out of an old borewell, broke out when the farmer, to whom the pond belongs, switched on the motor of the bore well.
An immediate response by ONGC fire team played a significant role in preventing its escalation to a major incident. The incident occurred at a local borewell that has been in operation for the past five years. Gas activity suddenly started from the borewell, and a fire ignited. ED- Asset Manager, Mr Amit Narayan stated that ONGC, as a responsible corporate entity, is both committed and well equipped to provide necessary assistance to handle this kind of incidents in the overall interest and safety of the local public. ONGC’s fire services and the regional crisis management teams have been deployed and preparations are under way to bring the situation under control. The area has been barricaded and there is no injury or damage to property.
Furthermore, Amit Narayan clarified that no ONGC pipeline or well is located near the area where the fire incident has occurred.
District fire officer, Konaseema, Parthasaradhi said that the gas released immediately after the farmer switched on the motor and gas caught fire. He said that it is good that a fire ignited to prevent the gas from forming a vapour cloud which is very dangerous. He mentioned that to cap the bore well a blow out capping team of ONGC from Narsapur, West Godavari district is arriving to cap the bore well.
He made it clear that gas leak leakage has nothing to do with the pipelines of either ONGC or GAIL. He said that the mud is also spilling out of the bore well which is about 150 feet deep. He said that there are no habitations in two kilometres of the site. He further said that one metric ton of mud is needed to cement the bore well. Stating that the gas leak is of low intensity, he said that gas remains from the upper layer of earth might have been released. He expressed hope that the gas leak will be capped in a couple of days.
