Fire breaks out at Ariyamangalam dumpyard in Trichy
Updated: 2023-07-18
TRICHY: Firefighters are fighting hard to control a major fire that broke out at the Ariyamangalam dumpyard on Tuesday.
According to the Trichy Corporation and the fire services department, the fire was allegedly triggered by a scrap disposal outlet abutting the dumpyard’s compound on the Ambikapuram Road.
Around 2.45pm, the fire engulfed a waste mound containing plastic waste. The gusty wind aggravated the fire and covered several other mounds on the southern side of the dumpyard, leaving the entire vicinity in a plume of smoke.
The department initially rushed four fire extinguisher vehicles from three stations. As there was trouble in controlling the flames, two more vehicles were brought in. Nine water trucks supplied water from the sources within the 47.7-acre dumpyard.
“Heavy winds aggravating the smoke deterred the operations to put out the fire quickly. Amid the risks, firefighters climbed atop the waste mounds to pump the water,” G Anusuya, district fire officer told TOI.
The fire service department and the corporation gave conflicting statements on when the situation would be brought under control. While the department stated that it was not sure about the time, corporation claimed that the situation could be controlled by Tuesday night.
The fire accident has come as a worry to people living in Ariyamangalam, Kattur and Palpannai as thick smoke covered the areas around the dumpyard.
“We have lodged a police complaint to identify the scrap outlet that caused the fire. Compound walls will be raised and strengthened to prevent such fire accidents due to external factors,” mayor Mu Anbalagan said.
