Fire at NRS OT triggers panic

Kolkata: A fire broke out inside an operation theatre of the cardiology department of NRS Medical College Hospital around 8 am on Saturday, triggering panic among patients and their relatives. Two fire tenders were rushed to the spot and the fire was brought under control in two hours. Cops said the fire was first spotted on the fourth floor of the six storey USB Building.
Though no injury was reported, there was panic as smoke engulfed the area. Some of those present on the floor came down and those, who were upstairs, were told to head to the top floor. Hospital employees rushed the OT to check the source of the smoke. The flames, though, remained confined within the OT till two engines of the fire brigade arrived and doused the fire.
“It was an electrical fire, prima facie. However, only a proper investigation will establish the exact reason,” said a senior fire department official.
According to fire brigade officials at the spot, the fire was triggered by an electrical short-circuit inside the OT leading to the smoke. The cath-lab on the floor had to be shut down, though patients were not evacuated. A decision on restarting the cath-lab will be taken soon, said hospital authorities, adding the “shutdown” will be over after they receive a go-ahead from the electrical wing and CESC. Surgeries or treatment were not majorly affected, claimed sources.
