Fire breaks out in edible oilwarehouse at Ghantaghar

Kanpur: A major fire broke out in an edible oil godown near the Ghantaghar area under the limits of Collectorganj police station of the city late on Saturday night.

As the godown is located in the congested area, chaos prevailed among those residing adjacently and in the vicinity. About a dozen fire tenders were pressed into service after the locals alerted the fire control room. LPG cylinders were taken out from the houses of the people living next to the godown. Fire personnel brought the blaze under control after about 2 hours of efforts. None reported to have suffered any injury.

Fire department sources said that at about 12.45 am, they received information about a fire in the edible oil warehouse located in the Ghantaghar area. Soon fire personnel along with tenders from Mirpur, Latouche Road and Kidwai Nagar stations rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation.

Chief fire officer Deepak Sharma said the way the fire was taking a formidable shape, a total of 12 fire tenders were used to extinguish the fire. “We immediately got the LPG cylinders removed from the houses which were very close to the warehouse. It took about two and a half hours to douse the fire,” he said and added, “Property and goods worth several lakhs of rupees have been damaged, which is still being assessed. There has been no injury or loss of life in the incident.”
