Fire guts flat in Andheri bldg housing 2 shops; no one hurt

Updated: 2023-07-26

MUMBAI: A fire erupted in a second-floor flat of a seven-storey building at Lokhandwala market in Andheri on Tuesday evening. While the flat was gutted, no one was hurt in the incident. The building, which houses Sanghvi Hospital and a maternity home, on the first floor, is located on 4th Cross Lane.
Around 6.45pm, the blaze started in the B-wing of Nebula building in flat number 201 belonging to government advocate Mangleshwari Prasad. “I was out for work and when I returned, I heard a popping sound from the bedroom and the smell of smoke rose in the air. I saw sparks falling from the AC unit. I immediately vacated the house and informed my neighbour, Dr Raju Sahetya, who summoned help and asked us to call the authorities,” Prasad said. “Everything in my home has been burned down including my law books, TV, and electronic appliances.”

Nebula has basic fire extinguishers and cylinders, but they were powerless as the blaze spread. Three fire engines, two jumbo water tankers and one quick response vehicle were rushed to the site. The blaze was doused after 45 minutes, and cooling operations were under way at night.
Like Prasad, other residents of Nebula shifted to relatives’ homes for the night. Dipenti and Moizz Merchant, who live on the third floor, smelled smoke and ran out of the building. “Fortunately, no damage was done to our home or belongings. But we will be displaced until power and gas supply is restored,” Dipenti said.
Society secretary Godwin Patrao said he disconnected power supply to B-Wing and closed the piped gas valves of the entire building.
Dr Pradeep Sanghvi, who runs Sanghvi Hospital on the first floor, said the blaze was contained on the second floor itself.
