SHIJIAZHUANG – A coal mine fire killed five people in North China’s Hebei province Friday morning, according to the Hebei Administration of Work Safety.
The accident occurred in the Jiazhuang Coal Mine in Jingxing county. A preliminary investigation indicated that seven miners were working underground when the mine’s air compressor caught fire, the administration said.
Two of the miners managed to escape, while the other five were suffocated.
The mine was closed in October 2008 and was operating with an expired license, the administration said.
Su Fengshan, the mine’s manager, has been taken into police custody.
The public security department of Jingxing has launched a further investigation into the case.
