Updated: 2023-08-04
Cuddalore: A minor fire accident was reported in mine 2 of NLC India Limited (NLCIL) on Thursday. There was no casualty. Fire engulfed an overburden handling tripper at mine 2 at Mandarakuppam in the township in Cuddalore district.
The fire was extinguished immediately before the arrival of the fire tenders thereby preventing loss of lives and avoiding major damages to equipment, said a company statement. The equipment was put back into operation after routine daily maintenance without production loss and is presently in operation from 1pm on Thursday, it said.
Fire and rescue service personnel suspected that heat generated due to friction in the conveyor belt might have caused the fire, which fed on the overburden handling tripper. Fire accident have occurred when contract workers affiliated to Jeeva Oppantha Thozilalar Sangam (Jots) have launched an indefinite strike from the last week of July demanding the company to fulfill their six-charter demands.
The union has demanded among other things to regularise the services of contract workers enrolled in the industrial cooperative society (Indcoserve) and others who have not enrolled in the society so far.
