Scrap shop gutted in fire at Killipalam
Updated: 2023-08-05
Thiruvananthapuram: A major fire broke out at a scrap shop at Killipalam on Friday evening. No casualties have been reported. However, five fire force units had to work for nearly two hours before the fire could be doused completely.
Thick smoke engulfed the neighbouring areas as smoke emanated from waste materials which were piled up in huge quantities at the shop. Short circuit is suspected to be the cause of fire; however a concrete conclusion could be derived after thorough technical examination.
As the officers anticipated the need for constant supply of water and saved time by setting up a high pressure pumping system directly from Killiyaar.
The fire safety officers fought fire from four sides to prevent flames from spreading out to nearby buildings. Owing to the nature of combustible materials which were packed in sacks, flames coming out from smouldering waste materials posed further challenges for the team.
In January 2022, another scrap shop caught fire at Killipalam. Around 25 fire force units had to be used to douse the fire then. The fire had happened in a densely housed area filled with shops and houses; however no casualties were reported as all the residents were evacuated even as the fire was raging and threatened to engulf the nearby shops and houses.
