Kochi: A major fire gutted a fruit stall shop functioning in a single-storey building situated on Gujarati Road in Mattancherry in the early hours of Saturday morning.
The shop, Fruits Garden, was completely destroyed in the fire leading to an estimated loss of Rs 6-7 lakh to the owner. According to fire force personnel, the Mattancherry station received a call around 12.50am informing them about the fire at the building. Two units of the fire engines reached the spot and started measures to put out the fire and by 4am, the blaze was doused.
It is suspected that a short circuit led to the fire. “The shopkeeper had extended the power supply line from the main building to a temporary shed set up for displaying and selling fruits. The fire appears to have been triggered by a short circuit. Wooden boxes piled up in the shop accelerated the blaze,” said K P Prakosh, station officer in charge of the station.
A short circuit had caused a fire at a furniture shop in Puthuvype last month leading to an estimated loss of Rs 40 lakh to the shopkeeper. The fire had started in midnight and it took three hours to extinguish the fire.
