NEW DELHI: At least nine people, including locals and police officials, sustained minor injuries when a sofa factory caught fire in west Delhi’s Mayapuri in the early hours of Wednesday.
Fire officials said a glue drum burst on the ground floor, leading to the injuries. The factory, running out of a three-storey building, didn’t have any no-objection certificate from the fire department.
The fire department received a call regarding the fire in Mayapuri’s F block around 2am. “Five fire tenders were sent to the spot and the fire was brought under control by 4am,” said Atul Garg, director of Delhi Fire Services (DFS). The factory manufactured iron spring used in sofas and packing boxes caught fire that spread to a drum of glue that also burst, he added.
The nine injured people were identified as Rakesh, Ram Niwas, Santosh, Harichand, Vikrant, Kishan and Inderjeet, all locals, and head constables Randhir Singh and Vikrant. Most of the people who sustained injuries were locals who gathered outside the factory after the fire erupted. One of the policemen sustained a fracture in a leg.
Amit Kumar, station officer of the Janakpuri fire station who went to the spot, said the blast had occurred before the fire tenders reached the factory. “The factory had a godown on the ground floor where the alleged blast took place. It appears that a furnace was on that led to it, though the exact reason is being ascertained,” said Kumar. Due to the blast, the two gates of the factory got flung in the air and injured those standing outside, Kumar said. He added that nobody was inside the factory.
A case under relevant provisions has been registered at Mayapuri police station.
