BENGALURU: Nine people, including a chief engineer and an executive engineer, sustained burn injuries after an accidental fire broke out at the quality control laboratory (QCL) of Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) in Karnataka on Friday evening.
According to fire and emergency services, they received information about the fire accident around 4.52 pm and two fire tenders were rushed to the spot.
They managed to douse the fire.
BBMP officials said that they test the quality of civic work materials — including cement, sand, metal, bitumen, bituminous mix and others — at the lab before using them for the civic works carried out by the BBMP.
The civic agency has its own lab at its head office in the city.
The staffers of the lab were busy testing the materials when a chemical used for the quality test exploded due to overheating.
Nine people sustained injuries and they were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
According to BBMP officials, they have identified the injured persons as chief engineer Shivakumar, executive engineer Santosh Kumar, lab staffer Kiran, Siraj, Manoj, Sridhar, Vijayamala, Jyothi and Srinivas.
