Two morning blazes destroy jewellery store, transformer
Updated: 2023-08-18
Pune: A jewellery store in Wanowrie and an electric transformer in Tulshibaug were gutted in fire on Thursday morning.
Fire officials identified a short circuit as the prima facie cause of the two fires. No loss of life was reported because the markets were closed when the fire broke out at 5.30am and 8.10am respectively.
Fire officer Kailash Shinde from Kondhwa Khurd sub fire station said, “Passer-byes noticed thick black fumes emanating from a jewellery store and alerted the central fire brigade control room, following which two fire tenders rushed to the spot. The store owner also reached the spot and opened the shutter. Our firemen gained control over the fire and doused it completely in 30 minutes.”
Shinde said, “The fire destroyed furniture and some plaster of paris. The store owner told us the incident did not cause harm to silver ornaments and articles because they were kept in the counter and showcase. The gold ornaments were also safe because it was locked in a safe.” After examining the extent of damage in the shop, the owner said the store caught fire due to a short circuit.
Fire officer Kamlesh Choudhari said, “The MSEDCL officials have informed us that the transformer caught fire because of a short circuit as well, because it contained garbage and its wire was bitten by geese.”
“We doused the transformer fire in 10 minutes after the MSEDCL switched off the power supply,” Choudhari said, adding that the supply in Tulsibaug market and certain pockets of Budhwar Peth which was hit for some time was later restored by the MSEDCL personnel.
