The remnants of a science experiment that caught on fire is pictured at Far East University in Tainan on Tuesday.
Two Tainan schoolchildren are in stable condition after sustaining burns from a science demonstration with rubbing alcohol that went awry.
The incident occurred on Tuesday during a week-long soccer science camp being held at the Far East University gymnasium.
The Tainan Fire Bureau was called at about 12:19pm to respond to a fire incident at the gym, sending nine trucks with 20 paramedics, it said.
An 11-year-old boy sustained burns to his body and a six-year-old sustained burns to his back, firefighters said, adding that both students are awake and in stable condition.
Firefighters said they were able to put out the fire in 10 minutes after it had burned an area about 0.5m².
About 80 students were participating in a “magic” science demonstration when the blaze erupted, likely caused by rubbing alcohol, an initial investigation showed.
