Two students seriously burned in NTU lab explosion

Firefighters respond to the scene of an explosion and fire at a labratory at the National Taiwan University on Thursday.
Two students were seriously burned after an explosion and fire in a lab at the National Taiwan University’s Department of Chemical Engineering on Thursday.
The Taipei City Police Department dispatched firefighters and ambulances after receiving a report at 11:51am that a fire broke out in a lab at the NTU.
Police said that an initial report showed that aluminum chloride ignited after it came in contact with heated oil during an experiment. A total of 84 firefighters and medical crew responded to the incident, and the fire was brought under control at 12:25pm, police said.
A preliminary report said that two people were seriously burned and 10 people were slightly injured. A detailed report on the fire and explosion would be made public after an investigation, police said.
