Fire engulfs sawmill, losses pegged at 15L

Krishnagiri: A major fire broke out at a sawmill at Uliyalam near Hosur here in the early hours of Saturday, completely destroying machinery and timber worth 15 lakh.
Police said the sawmill was run by M Subramani, 43, of Bagalur. “He locked the mill around 9pm on Friday and left for his house. Thick smoke started emanating from the mill around 5.30am on Saturday,” a police officer said.
Passers-by, who noticed this, immediately alerted the fire and rescue services personnel at Hosur fire station. “The firefighters rushed to the spot and brought the flames under control after nearly three hours of struggle,” the officer said.
Preliminary inquiry revealed that the fire was caused by a short circuit. The Bagalur police have registered a case and launched an inquiry into the incident.
