Another fire breaks out at Formosa Plastics petrochemical complex
Updated: 2012-04-17
Taipei, April 17 (CNA) A fire broke out Tuesday at an oil refinery run by the Formosa Plastics Group in its petrochemical complex in Mailiao, Yunlin County, firefighters said.
The refinery, run by group subsidiary Formosa Petrochemical Corp., reported the fire at 4:20 a.m., and it was put out immediately, firefighters said. No casualties were reported.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, but firefighters suggested the fire began during a test run of the plant’s equipment when leaking lubricating oil was set aflame by hydrogen gas that was ignited by sparks.
The refinery was ordered shut down by the local government after a fire broke out in the facility in July 2010. It has been closed since then, and tests were being run to determine when it could resume operations.
Formosa Petrochemical President Tsao Mihn said the refinery suffered no major damage, and trial runs would resume in one or two weeks after a complete inspection. (By Huang Kuo-fang, Chao Hsiao-Hui and Hanna Liu)
