‘Mysterious’ fire follows case against Jubo League leader

A ‘mysterious’ fire burnt down important official documents and valuables worth Tk 50 thousand at the office of Jaldhaka upazila controller of food (UCF) in the district early Sunday.
“The night guards of adjacent upazila parishad compound first observed the fire and informed the upazila nirbahi officer who rushed to the spot and tried to control the fire with the help of office staff. Later fire brigade vehicles reached the spot and doused the fire. By this time most of the important documents were burnt into ashes,” UCF Abdul Jalil Mondol told this correspondent.
“I live outside the office at night and the food office has no night guard of its own,” he said.
Earlier on April 8, the food official filed a case with Jaldhaka police station accusing Abdul Wahed Bahadur, upazila unit president of Jubo League, and his accomplices for manhandling him and causing damage to the upazila food office.
“Jubo League leader Bahadur became furious as I refused to meet his demand for Tk one lakh as illegal toll,” the UCF said in the case.
After Bahadur got bail from the court in connection with the case, his close associates Sumon and Nirmol on several occasions made cell phone calls to me and gave death threat, the food official said.
